What Are Comets Origins and Scientific Findings

Comets are the great mystery items of the solar system. For centuries, people saw them as evil omens, appearing and disappearing. They looked ghostly, even frightening. But, as scientific learning took over from superstition and fear, people learned what comets really are: chunks of ice and dust and rocks. Some never get close to the Sun, but others do, and those are the ones we see in the night sky.   Solar heating and the action of the solar wind change the appearance of a comet drastically, which is why they are so fascinating to observe. However, planetary scientists also treasure comets because they represent a fascinating part of our solar systems origin and evolution. They date back to the earliest epochs the history of the Sun and planets and thus contain some of the oldest materials in the solar system.   Comets in History and Exploration Historically,  comets  have been referred to as dirty snowballs since they are large chunks of ice mixed with dust and rock particles. Interestingly, it has only been in the past hundred years or so that the idea of comets as icy bodies was ultimately proved to be true. In more recent times, astronomers have viewed comets from Earth, as well as from spacecraft. Several years ago, a mission called Rosetta actually orbited the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and landed a probe on its icy surface.   The Origins of Comets Comets come from distant reaches of the solar system, originating in places called Kuiper belt  (which extends out from the orbit of Neptune, and the  Oà ¶rt cloud  which forms the outermost part of the solar system. Comet orbits are highly elliptical, with one focus at the Sun and the other end at a point sometimes well beyond the orbit of Uranus or Neptune. Occasionally a comets orbit will take it directly on a collision course with one of the other bodies in our solar system, including the Sun. The gravitational pull of various planets and the Sun also shape their orbits, making such collisions more likely as the comet makes more trips around the Sun.   The Comet Nucleus The primary part of a comet is known as the nucleus. Its a mixture of mostly ice, bits of rock, dust and other frozen gases. The ices are usually water and frozen carbon dioxide (dry ice). The nucleus is very hard to make out when the comet is closest to the Sun because its surrounded by a cloud of ice and dust particles called the coma. In deep space, the naked nucleus reflects only a small percentage of the Suns  radiation, making it almost invisible to detectors.  Typical comet nuclei vary in size from about 100 meters to more than 50 kilometers (31 miles) across. Theres some evidence that comets may have delivered water to Earth and other planets early in the solar systems history. The Rosetta mission measured the type of water found on Comet 67/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, and found that its water was not quite the same as Earths. However, more study of other comets is needed to prove or disprove just how much water comets may have made available to the planets.   The Comet Coma and Tail As comets approach the Sun, radiation begins to vaporize their frozen gases and ice, creating a cloudy glow around the object. Known formally as the coma, this cloud can extend many thousands of kilometers across. When we observe comets from Earth, the coma is often what we see as the head of the comet. The other distinctive part of a comet is the tail area. Radiation pressure from the Sun pushes material away  from the comet, forming two tails.  The first tail is the dust tail, while the second is the plasma tail — made up of gas that has been evaporated from the nucleus and energized by interactions with the solar wind. Dust from the tail gets left behind like a stream of bread crumbs, showing the path the comet has traveled through the solar system. The gas tail is very tough to see with the naked eye, but a photograph of it shows it glowing in a brilliant blue. It points directly away from the Sun and is influenced by the solar wind. It often extends over a distance equal to that of the Sun to the Earth. Short-Period Comets and the Kuiper Belt There are generally two types of comets. Their types tell us their origin in the solar system. The first are comets that have short periods.  They orbit the Sun every 200 years or less. Many comets of this type originated in the Kuiper Belt. Long-period Comets and the Oort Cloud Some comets take more than 200 years to orbit the Sun once. Others can take thousands or even millions of years. The ones with the long periods come from the Oort cloud. It extends more than 75,000 astronomical units away from the Sun and contains millions of comets. (The term astronomical unit is a measurement, equivalent to the distance between Earth and the Sun.) Sometimes a long-period comet will come in toward the Sun and veer off into space, never to be seen again. Others get captured into a regular orbit that brings them back again and again.   Comets and Meteor Showers Some comets will cross the orbit that the Earth takes around the Sun. When this happens a trail of dust is left behind.  As Earth traverses this dust trail, the tiny particles enter our atmosphere. They quickly begin to glow as they are heated up during the fall to Earth and create a streak of light across the sky. When a large number of particles from a comet stream encounters Earth, we experience a  meteor shower. Since the comet tails are left behind in specific locations along Earths path, meteor showers can be predicted with great accuracy. Opinion On Affirmative Action annon Note: This essay contains opinions NOT shared by the host of this web site. Affirmative action is wrong and will not help solve the problems minorities face. The reason it is wrong is because it's discrimination. It has no place in today's society in today's society because it does more bad than good. In addition to that most people don't enjoy the presence of affirmative action. Also, it appears that affirmative action can actually be detrimental to employees health. First of all, affirmative action is discrimination, there is no hiding it. When an employer hires anyone because he or she is a minority, even if someone else if more qualified to do the job, it is discrimination. Just because it is reverse discriminat ion, when whites are discriminated against and minorities are being discriminated for, doesn't make it right. Affirmative action legalizes discrimination (Steele 1990, 39). I thought discrimination was illegal in this country (Buchanan 1995, 1). Also , if this discrimination continues racism in the United States may become worse. Imagine what you would feel like if you couldn't get a job just because you are a white man and not a hispanic man. The racism will become worse because of it, and that is the very thing it is trying to prevent. It is possible that because of affirmative action, racism will grow and continue to grow until we history repeats itself and we end up living under Jim Crow laws again. That is an extreme possibility to end up und er Jim Crow laws again, but it is a definite possibility to end up somewhere close to Jim Crow laws again. In addition to that, people say affirmative action is ok because it cures past discrimination (Keyes 1996, 1). Discrimination wasn't ok when blacks were the ones getting the short end of the stick. Therefore it's not ok when whites are discriminated ag ainst (DeWit 1996, 1). Two wrongs don't make a right. Therefore, affirmative action doesn't make discrimination ok just because it's against blacks instead of whites. Affirmative action in college is the most discriminating thing this country has ever seen since the Jim Crow laws many years ago (Buchanan 1995, 1). At ivy league colleges the median GPA of applicants is close to 4.0 and S.A.T.'s are close to 1300, mino rities are let in with GPA's less than 3.0 and S.A.T.'s less than 1000 (D'Souza 1990, 231). The only way for colleges to achieve ethnic proportionalism is to downplay or abandon merit criteria and to accept students from typically under represented groups, such as blacks, hispanics, and american indians, over better qualified students from am ong whites and asian americans (D'Souza 1990, 231). Obviously, affirmative action is allowing undereducated citizens to get into college when the people that are qualified aren't getting accepted when they should. When we passed the equal opportunities law, it didn't mean treat different races differently , it means we should treat all people as equals, affirmative action doesn't treat everyone as equals (Hacker 1990, 229). If we lower acceptance standards for minorities, we should lower standards for everyone. Since nobody would do that we should raise the standard for minorities. In addition, if affirmative action gets its way, it will do more harm than good. Affirmative action will only work short term because if you hire a minority that's under qualified they'll eventually get fired. Also, you can only hire so many people, ev entually you'll get too much under qualified people working for you and you'll eventually have to abandon affirmative action all together. Also, affirmative action doesn't work because it doesn't change anything (Keyes 1996, 1). If there is racism in to day's modern age, then racism will always be present and affirmative action won't work. In addition if we need to discriminate against white people to give minorities jobs now, it won't change. Giving someone a job won't do any good in making the qualit y of life of minorities better. Just because you enroll more minorities in your college, doesn't mean you're making the playing field even. When someone isn't good enough to get into a certain college, they're out of their league when they get in. Only 15% of black and 22% of hispanic affirmative action students accepted to Berkeley in 1987 graduated (D'Souza 1990, 233). The Pros and Cons of Teaching in Block Schedules Education is full of ideas like year-round schooling, vouchers, and block scheduling, so its important for administrators and educators to look at the pros and cons of an idea before implementing it. Strategies for one popular idea, block schedules, can  help make the transition easier and more effective. In block scheduling- unlike a traditional school day that typically has six 50-minute classes- the school might schedule two traditional days a week, with six 50-minute classes, and three nontraditional days, with only four classes that meet for 80 minutes each. Another type of block schedule that many schools use is called the 4X4 schedule, where students take four classes instead of six each quarter. Each yearlong class only meets for one semester. Each semester class only meets for a quarter. There are pros and cons to block schedules compared to traditional school scheduling. Block Scheduling Pros In block scheduling, a teacher sees fewer students during the day, thereby giving him or her the ability to spend more time with each one. Because of the increased span of teaching time, longer cooperative learning activities can be completed in one class period. There is more time for labs in science classes. Students also have less information to deal with during each school day, but over the course of a semester or quarter, they can delve more deeply into the curriculum of four classes, instead of six. Because of the decreased number of classes, students also have less homework on any given day. The teacher is able to provide more varied instruction during class, and he may find it easier to deal with students with disabilities and different learning styles. Planning periods are longer, allowing educators to spend more time preparing for classes and doing the administrative work required for teaching, such as grading, contacting parents, and meeting with fellow teachers. Block Scheduling Cons In a block schedule, teachers typically only see students four times a week- such as Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday- which means that students lose continuity on the days they dont see a given teacher. If a student misses a day under the block schedule, he is actually missing the equivalent of nearly two days compared to the traditional 50-minute-class schedule. No matter how well planned, on many days, the teacher can end up with 10 to 15 minutes of extra time, where students often begin their homework. When all of this time is added up at the end of the semester, the teacher covers less information and curriculum. In the 4X4 schedule, the teacher has to cover all of the required information in one quarter. In an economics class at a typical high school, for example, if the quarter happens to be during football season and while homecoming is occurring, the teacher can lose valuable class time due to interruptions. In the 4X4 schedule, it is especially difficult to cover the necessary material for Advanced Placement courses in the time allotted. To compensate, many schools have to extend United States history so that it is a two-part course and lasts the entire year in order for the teacher to cover all of the required material. Strategies for Teaching Under the Block Schedule When used in the proper setting with the right students and a well-prepared teacher, block scheduling can be very useful. However, schools need to keep a close eye on such things as test scores and discipline problems to see if the schedule has any noticeable effect. In the end, it is important to remember that good teachers are just that; regardless of what schedule they teach under, they adapt. Though block schedule classes are longer than traditional class periods,  lecturing  for 80 minutes will likely cause any teacher to become hoarse over the course of a few days and possibly lose the attention of students, resulting in decreased learning.  Instead,  teachers should vary their instruction in a block schedule, using teaching techniques such as debates,  whole group discussions, role-plays, simulations, and other  cooperative learning activities. Other strategies for block schedule teaching include: Engaging Howard Gardners  multiple intelligences  and tapping into varying the learning modalities, such as kinesthetic,  visual, or  auditory. This can help a teacher keep up the interest and attention of students.Having two or three  mini-lessons  on hand to fill any extra time in case the lesson plan doesnt take the full block schedule period.Taking full advantage of the time allotted to institute projects that can be difficult to complete in shorter class periods.Doing a review of material from previous lessons. This is especially important in block schedule formats where students dont see the teacher every day. In a block schedule, a teacher need not feel he or she has to be the center of attention at all times during the class period. Giving students independent work and allowing them to work in groups are good strategies for these longer class periods. Block schedules can be very taxing on a teacher, and its important to use strategies to manage teacher burnout since educators are the glue that holds block schedules together.

International Law - Essay Example Treaty law essentially entails the same binding nature as custom, and is only distinguished from custom because it is more formal than the former.2 However, treaties are generally written law and as such is a more certain source of international law.3 Although some international law scholar refer to treaties and customary international law interchangeably, there is a clear distinction since customary international law is bereft of written law and treaties are identified with written instruments. For example, Article 2(a) of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties 1974 proves that: ‘treaty’ means an international agreement concluded between States in written form and governed by international law, whether embodied in a single instrument or in two or more related instruments and whatever its particular designation.4 In this regard there are two types of treaties under international law that represent important sources of international law. The first kind of treaties i s law-making treaties that establish rules that are universally and generally applicable. The second kind of treaties at international law are â€Å"treaty-contracts† which are concluded between two or more states and cover specific issues relative to the contracting states.5 Law-making treaties are direct sources of international law, while contract-treaties merely outline treaty obligations between the contracting states and thus circumvent the need to identify and apply customary international law, unless the treaty requires the application of customary international law.6 Since the mid-19th century there has been an unprecedented proliferation of law-making treaties which have come to be known as â€Å"international legislation†.7 The proliferation of international law-making treaties was responses to the inefficiency of international customary law in meeting the immediate needs of the international community for the regulation of mutual interests. The immediate ne eds of the international community arose out of developments at the economic and industrial levels which were increasingly tightening the interconnectedness of states. Thus relationships between states became more complicated and diverse.8 Law-making treaties can be viable alternatives to customary laws because as history informs, law-making treaties typically serve to main functions. First they may articulate crystalized rules of international law, thus making customary law more visible and essentially codifying customary law into an identifiable source of law. Secondly, law-making treaties may identify new issues and formulate new rules of international law designed to respond to new issues or to change current practices by states.9 For instance, UN Law of the Sea Treaty 1982 establishes new rules relative to jurisdictional parameters applicable to the seas.10 The UN Law of the Sea Treaty 1982 also codifies some customary rules of international law. However, the 1982 Treaty also p rovides new provision such as the creation of the International Sealed Authority for controlling the distribution of marine resources. The world largest banks are connected through a mesh of short term loans which provide credit guarantee and financial contracts of others. This connection is a risky one that can also be a cause for a big bank to bail out. The economic crisis may also happen because of the doubts aroused in the ability of a single financial firm to meet its prescribed responsibility and to repay their loan. The bank regulation can improve in requiring some reserve ratio during the thriving times. Another way is to limit the percentage funding which come from the short time money market. (Pettinger 2009) Giant Firms proved hard to manage subsidiaries and struggled to be built common system: In my opinion, the giant firm may fail to build a common system may be because of the disappointed employees of the firm which may be because of the rules. The big firm won’t be having enough time to check whether the highly talented employee is working for the good on-going project and to know whether he is comfortable with that or not. I also feel that good discussion is a well said example for the consistent growth of the firm. So these giant firms might have not followed the discussion process properly. Priority should also be given for the talented employees to work for the wellness of the firm. The mission and vision should be clearly set and the execution of the process for it should be done accordingly to make their work more easy and it will also pave way for building common system. Basel 3 and complicated regulation and increase the cost: In my opinion, the global and the liquidity rule (Basel 3) can be focussed better than they do now. All the banks will face a strict regulation because of the new liquidity standard, the risk coverage, and the new leverage ratio. Because of the bank capital will also decrease along with the increase in capital ratio for the upcoming years. This will cause problem for some banks. I feel that bank will experience the pressure on Return of Equity (ROE) because of the increase in the capital and the liquidity cost. For this bank have to work in a number of areas and have to work on Basel 3 issues and they have to set priority for the close, mid and for the longer term. It had a good growth. According to George Moore the chairman of new look committee said that they boost the development of the business till maximum. But the current head is controversy. Why I Read :: Personal Narrative, Autobiographical Essay

"Why did you read all four books?" a peer asked me after I revealed my summer reading list. "Well," I said, "I thought they would punish me if I didn't." Was this a total lie to get someone off my back, or was it the truth? While it was probably a combination of both, I decided I read for myself. I read to find out about the issues I had been struggling with, like time and humanity. To have feelings that I have never experienced and to escape. With these books I was no longer a scared middle-class white boy from Tennessee, and though it may be cheesy, I was anyone, anywhere. The issue of time has caught my attention since reading Siddhartha. I desperately want to understand time since it is the basis of society. We live in the present, but these words are in the past. Sure, you could read the words over again, but the first impression is the past. So the past is really all we can look at. But the past does not matter if it is temporary. In 1984 Orwell states, "he who controls the past controls the future." The verb "controls" is very important here. It is in a present tense, stating that he who can change the past owns the future. So why would the past matter if it is changeable? The year could not even be known. It could be the same day forever. Why does the past matter anyway... or even the present? On a large time scale everything we know is but a blip. Einstein's Dreams proposes a profound statement which indirectly points out that the supernatural controls time. We will not be able to slow down the last second, so it will last 'forever'. We can't to uch time; it's out of our reach. So therefore, life as we know it has an ending when God says so. Time will continue to pass until the end at its seemingly eternal rate. It's like a river, unstoppable and ever flowing. Trying to battle the current is futile. The pain just makes you feel time pass more slowly when in fact the river keeps running. While personal existence may seem unimportant, Celie from The Color Purple brings across an important statement, " I'm poor, I'm black, I may be ugly... But I am here." While the past, future, and present may seem incredibly small, it's all we have.

Maoist Attack and Demand for Telangana State Essay

Telangana is a region in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. It has borders with states of Maharashtra on the north and north-west, Karnataka on the west, Chattisgarh on the north-east, Orissa and Coastal Andhra region on the east and Rayalseema region of Andhra Pradesh on the south. This region has an area of 1,14,840 square kilometres and a population of 3,52,86,757 which is 41. 6% of Andhra Pradesh state population. The Telangana region has 10 districts: Adilabad, Hyderabad, Khamam, Karimnagar, Mahbubnagar, Medak, Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Rangareddy and Warangal. The Krishna and Godavari rivers flow through the region from west to east. The Telangana movement refers to a group of related political activities organized to support the creation of a new state of Telangana, from the existing state of Andhra Pradesh in south India. The Telangana Movement The movement to create Telangana has been continuing from 1952 onwards. In February 2009 the in February 2009 the state government declared that it had no objection, in principle, to the formation of separate Telangana and that the time had come to move forward decisively on this issue. To resolve related issues, the government constituted a joint house committee. In the lead-up to the 2009 General Elections in India, all the major parties in Andhra Pradesh supported the formation of Telangana. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) again announced that they would create two more states, Telangana and Gorkhaland, if they won the election. The Congress Party said it was committed to Telangana statehood, but claimed that Muslim minorities were opposed to the creation of separate state, along with the majority of the people. The MIM party and Muslim leaders within Congress felt that the new state would jeopardize the interests of minorities, the safety and welfare of Muslims, and the future of the Urdu language. The Telugu Desam Party promised to work for Telangana statehood. Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) joined a Mahakutami (â€Å"grand alliance†) with the TDP and other parties to defeat the Congress party for denying statehood. The Praja Rajyam Party (PRP), founded in August 2008 by film star Chiranjeevi, pledged support to Telangana statehood if it becomes inevitable. The Nava Telangana Praja Party announced that it would merge with PRP after it concluded that there was not enough political space for two sub-regional Telangana parties that had Telananga statehood as their main agenda, Devender Goud later quit PRP and returned to the Telugu Desam Party. In the 2009 elections, Congress returned to power both at the center and state. It won 154 out of 294 Assembly seats and 33 out of 42 Parliament seats. Within Telangana, Congress won 50 out of 119 Assembly seats and 12 out of 17 Parliament seats. On 29 November 2009 TRS president K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) started a fast-unto-death, demanding that the Congress party introduce a Telangana bill in Parliament. He was arrested by the government of Andhra Pradesh. Student organizations, employee unions, and various organizations joined the movement. General strikes shut down Telangana on 6 and 7 December. Student organizations planned a massive rally at the state Assembly on 10 December. The government warned that the rally did not have permission and deployed police troops throughout Telangana. The apparent decline in KCR’s health led to a sense of urgency to the issue. The Communist Party of India (Maoist) is a Maoist terrorist organization in India which aims to overthrow the government of India through violent means. It was founded on 21 September 2004, through the merger of the People’s War, and the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC). The merger was announced to the public on October 14 the same year. In the merger a provisional central committee was constituted, with the erstwhile People’s War Group leader Muppala Lakshmana Rao alias Ganapathi as General Secretary. The CPI (Maoist) are often referred to as Naxalites in reference to the Naxalbari insurrection conducted by radical Maoists in West Bengal in 1967. They claim to be fighting for the rights of the tribes in the forest belt around central India. That region contains deposits of minerals which are of interest to mining companies like Tata and Essar. There have been numerous human rights violations of the tribal people at the hands of government agencies. Naxals have been charged by the government of running an extortion economy in the guise of popular revolution, extorting vast amounts of money from local branches of mining companies and other businesses. They have been involved in several cases of blowing up schools and railway tracks, and accused of keeping the areas under their control away from modernity and development, so they can impose their will on the uneducated rural populace. In 2006, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh referred to the Naxalites as â€Å"the single biggest internal security challenge ever faced by our country. The Indian government, led by the United Progressive Alliance, banned the CPI (Maoist) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) as a terrorist organisation on 22 June 2009. As of June 2010, Indian Government has identified 83 districts in 9 states as â€Å"Naxal-hit†. Currently it has presence in remote regions of Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh as well as presence in Bihar and the triba l-dominated areas in the borderlands of Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Orissa. The CPI (Maoist) aims to consolidate its power in this area and establish a Compact Revolutionary Zone from which to advance the people’s war in other parts of India. A 2005 Frontline cover story called the Bhamragad Taluka, where the Madia Gond Adivasis live, the heart of the Naxalite-affected region in Maharashtra. The current general secretary of the party is Muppala Lakshmana Rao alias Ganapati. The highest decision making body of the party is its Politburo, comprising 14 (or 13) members, 6 of whom were either killed or arrested between 2007-10. Amongst those arrested, Kobad Ghandy is the senior-most member. Other arrested Politburo members include Pramod Mishra, Ashutosh Tudu and Amitabha Bagchi. Cherukuri Rajkumar alias Azad, the spokesperson for the party, who was gunned down in Andhra Pradesh was another Politburo member. Prashant Bose alias Kishan-da, Mallojula Koteswara Rao alias Kishenji and Katakam Sudarshan alias Anand are the three prominent members of its Politburo. Kishenji and Anand currently head the Eastern Regional Bureau and the Central Regional Bureau of the party respectively. The Central Committee of the party, which takes command from the Politburo and passes on the information to its members, comprises 32 members. The party hierarchy consists of the Regional Bureaus, which look after two or three states, the State Committees, the Zonal Committees, the District Committees and the dalams (armed squads). The military wings of the respective organisations, People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (military wing of MCCI) and People’s Guerrilla Army (military wing of PW), were also merged.

Perception of Strength and Limitations of the Managers Hanna was very organized in her day and made a checklist of things to do required of each charge nurse. She would check the crash cart that all materials were there and not expired and to make sure that all equipment was working properly. She also did tasks such as making sure all materials were stocked and if any were needed she would call Central Supply. She would also make trips down to the overflow IMC unit to check on the nurses there and would call down regularly for updates. After all the morning checks she would look over the patient manifest to see who was going to be discharged and downgraded and made room for potential incoming patients. When there was an emergency call light, multiple available nurses would rush to the room to help. Another limitation I saw was the nurses’ station desk w as full of papers. She knew about all the patients on her floor and was able to actively give suggestions of downgrades and discharges. She was able to catch mistakes such not having orders for foleys. She also suggested putting up signs that say â€Å"wash hands† on hand sanitizer dispensers outside of contact precaution rooms to remind nurses that they needed to wash their hands after leaving the room.
